Solar: Because Waiting for the Government Will Kill Us All
(A polite nudge toward energy independence, before we all freeze or go bankrupt)
There’s a famous phrase in British politics:
“Jam tomorrow, never jam today.”
Which roughly translates to:
“We’ll get around to sorting energy policy right after the next election, or the one after that, whichever comes first.”
Meanwhile, every business in the country is staring at energy bills like Victorian children pressed against a bakery window; hopeful yet traumatised.
So yes, by all means keep waiting for the perfect green subsidy.
But consider the possibility that your grandchildren will be doing the same thing.

The Government’s Grand Strategy
(As best we can interpret it)
The official plan seems to be:
Promise net-zero by 2050
Cut the stuff that helps us get there
Hope the private sector is in a good mood
Pray the North Sea coughs up more gas
Blame France when it doesn’t
And at the end of all that, the lights are still supposed to stay on. Lovely.
Commercial Solar: A Solution That Already Exists
Unlike most government energy programmes…
Solar works today
Solar pays for itself
Solar doesn't require parliamentary votes
Solar doesn’t need a mascot or a PR campaign
Solar won’t resign mysteriously to ‘spend more time with family’
A brief summary:
Option | Result |
Wait for government support | Bankruptcy |
Keep paying grid rates | Slightly slower bankruptcy |
Install solar on your own buildings | Money falls from the sky |
Hard choice, that one.

The “But Shouldn’t We Wait for Incentives?” Crowd
No.
Sit down.
Have a biscuit.
Subsidies are the decoration on the cake.
Commercial solar is the cake.
You reduce tenant bills immediately
You create a brand new income stream
You boost property value
You look clever and responsible
The sun doesn’t invoice you
It’s capitalism powered by astrophysics.
This Isn’t Just About Saving the Planet
(Though that’s a charming bonus)
It’s about:
Lower operating costs
Higher yields
More attractive buildings
Tenants who don’t sob when they see their energy bill
ESG points are simply the icing on top, the smug glow for doing the right thing while making money doing it.
Tragic, isn’t it?

Conclusion: Roofs Are Just Wasted Profit Potential
We have perfectly good square metres sitting above our heads doing nothing except keeping pigeons dry.
Cover them in solar panels.
Your future self will thank you.Your tenants will thank you. The Chancellor will… well… barely notice.
But crucially:
You won’t have to wait for the Government to save you. And at this point — that’s probably the only realistic route to survival
